In a bid to attract more Nigerian youths into the aviation industry, the National Black Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees (NBCFAE), Nigeria Chapter, is on a mission to raise awareness on the industry’s array of sub-sectors through an innovative mentoring program. The executives of NBCFAE revealed this at a “Meet the Media” event which took place recently at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja – Lagos.

According to sources, an awareness week is to be organized during which sixty (60) students between the ages of eleven (11) and seventeen (17), selected from across various schools in Lagos state will be chosen through a seven-hundred-words essay writing competition with the topic, “Impact of Aviation in Economic Development in Nigeria”, and winners will bag the cash prize of $200.

From 24 to 26 May, 2022, the selected few will be tutored on the various options available for them in the event that they decide to pursue a career in aviation. They will also be taken on a tour of airport facilities for them to witness firsthand all that the industry has to offer.

The organizers’ decision to embark on this campaign was informed by misconceptions about the aviation industry, one of such being that activities in the sector are limited to the flying of airplanes – a misconception which the organizers of this awareness program seek to correct, while also nursing the hope of successfully enticing the younger generation to develop interest in pursuing careers in the industry.

This goal is fitting for an association like NBCFAE, which is a non-profit organization fighting for equal treatment for employees as well as equal employment opportunities for minority groups.
