One of Norway’s five P-8A Poseidon aircraft, Vingtor, was recently given a fresh look – the Royal Norwegian Air Force livery. The painting was done in Renton, after which the new jet was moved to the factory floor in preparation for flight testing.
Sources say that Norway is among the eight nations that have recently procured the P-8A Poseidon jet as their new multimission maritime aircraft.
Interestingly, according to a representative of the Norwegian Air Force, the names of all five of their new jets – Vingtor, Viking, Ulabrand, Hugin and Munin – were inspired by Norse mythology.
He said this nomenclature is a continuation of an age-old Norwegian Air Force tradition which began in 1942, when the names Vingtor, Viking and Ulabrand were first used on Norway’s PBY-5 Catalina maritime patrol aircraft. Today, these names are borne by the Air Force’ P-3 fleet.
The new jet’s mission systems are programmed for installation some time after Vingtor’s maiden flight, which has been scheduled for later this month.
