Ibom Air has embarked on the expansion of its fleet and has taken delivery of an A220-300 jet with registration SU-GFD. The aircraft touched down at 18:15 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) on Saturday. Delivery of the second jet of the same kind is expected in the near future.

Both jets which have reportedly been leased from Egypt Air bring Ibom Air’s fleet up to seven, and are expected to be deployed for the airline’s route expansion scheme.

According to sources, the limited capacity of the CRJ aircraft posed a major problem to the airline, as the jet constitutes the majority of Ibom Air’s fleet – a situation which is expected to change with the procurement of the A220-300, because these jets do not only have better capacity, but are also more economical to operate.

Both aircraft which are averagely 1.6 years old have previously been operated by Air Sinai, an Egypt Air subsidiary, and were purchased shortly before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
